Tips this Week

Fanon: Image, Praxis & Theory at anorak, SOLACE at Axel Obiger, Alexandra Hopf’s 77 Frauen unserer Zeit book launch at Rosa Luxemburg Platz Kunstverein, Science Week at HKW, Oliver Thie at Nothelfer and Sophie Calle opening in Hamburger Bahnhof, followed by 30 hours of sleepless...

This week brings not one, not two, but three double openings. Galleries have discovered shrinkflation economics: two artists, one opening, and the same number of wine bottles. Double the selling potential, half the Riesling ratio per artist. Galleries have always thrown anything against the wall to see what sticks, but now they do it two artists at a time. Berlin Science Week has arrived, and HKW has artists and scientists discussing fungal symbiosis. Anyone who is making a living in this art scene knows a thing or two about surviving on mushrooms, very little daylight, and attaching yourself to whoever has funding.

Monday, Nov. 9 marks 37 years since the Wall came down, and the city celebrates as it always does: by opening all gallery shows at the same time on opposite ends of town and giving everyone only a two-hour window to get there. Sophie Calle returns to Berlin for the first time in over 20 years with Is It Better?, a question the whole city has been asking since 1989.
Hamburger Bahnhof turns 30 years old, celebrating next weekend by staying open for 30 hours straight. Finally, an institution that keeps Berlin hours? I don’t know, I definitely feel too old for Berghain but probably too young for Hamburger Bahnhof after-hours.
This is it kids, as 2026 gallops to an end, these are the last few weeks of openings for the year. Bring your bike, your BVG app, and a copy of The Wretched of the Earth for the train.

Last but not least: our annual Artist Edition newsletter is coming up!
Every December we hand the newsletter over to artists. Our annual Artist Edition presents editions, multiples, prints, and small works by Berlin artists, just in time for the holidays and for anyone looking for a gift that isn’t another candle. If you have an edition you’d like us to feature, send us an image, the title, edition size, price, and a short description, along with your name and website or Instagram. This will be a curated newsletter. If you are in, you are in.

Fri 6 Nov 17h Hamburger Bahnhof Artist Talk: In conversation with Sophie Calle

The starting point for the conversation is her first solo exhibition in Berlin in more than 20 years. The exhibition brings together six groups of works from the past three decades, spanning photography, text, installation and video. The Detachment (1996), for example, is a series of photographs made in Berlin depicting GDR symbols that were removed after reunification. The expansive installation The Ghosts of Orsay (2022) is based on Calle’s relationship with the former hotel in the Paris railway station Gare d’Orsay (now the Musée d’Orsay) and brings together found objects, photographs and texts.
The exhibition opens on Thu 12 Nov 19h

Fri Nov 6, 18–21h at Kunstverein am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz 77 Frauen unserer Zeit – Book Launch & Video Screening KV_RLP × Alexandra Hopf × DISTANZ Verlag
In 1930 a book called Unsere Zeit in 77 Frauenbildnissen (Our Time in 77 Portraits of Women) set out to capture its era through its women. Alexandra Hopf picks up the idea with 77 reverse glass paintings of role models from the second half of the twentieth century, first shown at the Kunstverein in 2025. The series asks which roles these women embodied, how they staged themselves, and who made it into cultural memory and who was forgotten. The book is out with Distanz Verlag, with a foreword by Rebecca Wilton and an essay by Andreas Prinzing.
The launch also premieres Hopf’s new video Spitting Image (2026, 5:20 min.). It starts from her portrait of punk icon Jordan Mooney, shown in half-profile with a jet of liquid shooting from her mouth, and stretches that moment into extreme slow motion.

Fri, 6 Nov 19:00–22:00 at Axel Obiger – Raum für zeitgenössische Kunst Opening: SOLACE – Yuki Jungesblut and Hanna Mattes
A space to pause, to carry on, to begin anew. Taking the English word solace as its starting point, Jungesblut and Mattes have built a staged space of photographs, videos, texts and drawings that approach consolation from personal and abstract angles, always in dialogue with nature. Some works are still in progress and will keep changing during the show, the way solace does. It doesn’t erase loss, but it changes our relationship to it. It rarely arrives as a grand moment, more as a slowing down that has to be found and renewed again and again through small rituals and gestures.

Axel Obiger is an artist-run gallery and has been doing in-dialog shows since its inception.

TOUCHING BOUNDARIES: What Drives Art and Science Collaboration
Panel with Špela Petrič, Marcus Maeder, Miha Turšič, Matthias Rillig, Regine Rapp and Christian de Lutz
More and more labs are inviting artists in, but the artist isn’t there to illustrate the research or do outreach. The artist is a researcher too. Art Laboratory Berlin brings together a bio artist with a PhD in biochemistry, a composer with a PhD in environmental systems science, the Space Lab lead from Waag in Amsterdam and the FU Berlin plant ecologist who wrote “Ten simple rules for hosting artists in a scientific lab.” Together they look at where the two kinds of research meet, where they clash, and who gets to wonder in the first place. Part of Berlin Science Week, in the Safi Faye Saal. Free entry, registration via pretix.

Programmed by Philip Rizk, this two-part programme of screenings and conversations rereads Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth (1961) through film. It follows the launch of Majliss Fanon at the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut, where the book’s Arabic translation was published in 1963. Part 1 screens Haile Gerima’s monumental Harvest: 3000 Years (Ethiopia, 1976, 150 min.), the story of a peasant family on a wealthy landowner’s farm, set in motion by a teenage son and daughter and the local “madman.” It’s followed by a conversation between Rizk and Elena Vogman on Fanon’s chapters on national consciousness and on colonial war and mental disorders. Homework: read the book. Films with English subtitles, conversations in English, food by the anorak bakery.

Fri, 13 Nov 18:00–21:00 at Galerie Georg Nothelfer Opening: Oliver Thie – The Little Things That Run The World
For Oliver Thie (b. 1983), drawing isn’t a way of depicting things but a way of understanding them. Through long-term collaborations with scientists, he sets out on expeditions into the overlooked, holding the trace of the hand up against the instruments of modern science. The title comes from E.O. Wilson’s 1987 essay, which tu rned ecology’s attention to the inconspicuous microworld. For the first time, three of Thie’s central bodies of work are shown together, ranging from microscopic detail to tropical ecosystems to the deep time of geological archives. It amounts to a graphic homage to the smallest inhabitants of the biosphere at a time when they’re disappearing fast.

on view until Nov 14  at SCOTTY  Auf dem Karussell (On the Carousel)
with Şifa Girinci, Rezzan Gümgüm, Inga Harutyunyan, Eunsun Ko, Friedrich Kuhn, Lilli Kuschel, Sophia Muriel, Sharon Paz, Natascha Ungeheuer, Sümer Sayın
curated by Sigrun Drapatz and Şehnaz Layıkel Prange
The exhibition addresses the power of the past: how it shapes, blurs, and sometimes even erases our sense of being. It also explores the narrative—the story we tell about ourselves—that shapes, overwrites, relativizes, and transforms our memories. The artistic works created for this exhibition attempt to confront this dizzying subject. The exhibition takes place both indoors and outdoors. The indoor space features artists who grew up in countries other than Germany. The outdoor presentation showcases artists who grew up in Kreuzberg or moved there at a young age.

On view until Feb 14 at Schloss Biesdorf Opening: Overwrite! On behalf of things, species and voices that disappear. Mexico City and Berlin in Resonance
Performance: Victor del Oral, Lesen in Rotation
with Eckhard Böttger, Susanne Britz, Manfred Butzmann, Angelica Chio, Sandra Contreras, Anselmo Fox, Nathalie Grenzhaeuser, Arturo Hernández Alcázar, Günter Horn, Klaus-Dieter Kerwitz, Sophie Natuschke, Victor del Oral, Charlotte E. Pauly, Gert Pötzschig, Michael Rohrbeck, Joachim Scholz, Anita Stöhr Weber, Mario de Vega, Michael Zschocher
curated by Susanne Britz and Arturo Hernández Alcázar
Nine contemporary artists from Mexico City and Berlin look at social and ecological change, with selected works from the Museum Utopie und Alltag / Kunstarchiv Beeskow in the mix. To overwrite can mean to erase or impose, but it can also mean to listen and rewrite. The show starts from the long, tangled exchange between the two cities. Mexico took in German exiles under the Nazi regime, while Nazi ideas found admirers in Mexico’s conservative circles. The venue is part of the story too. Siemens laid one of the first submarine cables between Europe and the Americas, and the show asks what that kind of progress overwrote along the way.

On view until Nov 7 Frontrose presents: Minor Ruptures
Curated by Lina Louisa Krämer and Dr. Luisa Seipp Minor Ruptures is a multidisciplinary exhibition bringing together works by Rebecca Ackroyd, Benjamin Lallier and Sofia Defino Leiby. Through sculpture, painting and collage, the exhibition explores subtle moments of rupture and reassembly through which bodies, objects, images and memories become unstable, displaced and continuously transformed.
Rather than understanding rupture as an act of destruction, Minor Ruptures considers it as a productive condition. A moment in which existing forms, meanings and relationships are unsettled and opened up to new possibilities. Things detach from their original contexts, change function or enter unexpected connections. The exhibition focuses on these small interventions and shifts – moments in which established structures begin to loosen and new constellations can emerge.
